RASLRES is a European bio-energy project led by the Western Development Commission (WDC), Ireland with partners in Sweden, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Faroe Islands and Finland.
RASLRES, funded by the INTERREG IVB - Northern Periphery Programme, goes to the heart of the local community by using local resources and local people to provide a complete solution for renewable energy in turn providing jobs and opportunities for our communities.

Extracting slash and logging residues from our forests
A report on how Ireland could follow Sweden's example and potentially optimise the use of its National Forest Resource by extracting slash and logging residues from Irish forests. Donal Whelan, ITGA Technical Director, witnessed Sweden's harvesting first hand during the Worldbioenergy Conference in Jonköping and reports on how Ireland could utilise more of its forests to the benefit of timber growers, biomass users and the rural economy.

GLOSSARY:
Not familiar with the jargon? This may be of help:
- Bioenergy
Renewable energy produced from organic matter through the conversion of complex carbohydrates. This energy may either be used directly as fuel, processed into liquids or gasses, or be a residual of the processing or conversion mechanisms.
- Carbon Displacement
Offsetting of CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion by substituting fossil fuels with bioenergy.
|
- Carbon Sequestration
The provision of long-term storage of carbon in the terrestrial biosphere, underground, or oceans, so that the buildup of carbon dioxide, a principle greenhouse gas, concentration in the atmosphere reduces or slows.
- Logging residues
The unused portions of growing-stock and non-growing-stock trees cut or killed by logging and left in the woods.
- Wood Processing Residue
The unused portion of materials generated during wood processing or by-products created during the pulping process
