"Let's talk forestry, a forest owner's journey" takes you through the life cycle of sustainably managed forests in Ireland, in terms of economic, environmental and social sustainability, as told by private woodland owners. Each month we interview another forest owner and get their thoughts about forestry and forest management. From the decision to plant in episode 1, right through to felling and timber uses in episode 12.

A series of online talks for timber growers and the farming community

Following on from the November 2021 Series of Forestry Webinars, the 2022 Series commenced Thursday 10th February last.

'Use of Earth observation, Satellite and Drone Technology in Forestry'
Talks & Speakers:
Dr Michael Schmidt - General Director, Inter-Institutional Projects at CONABIO, Mexico, presentation on Remote Sensing for Carbon and Natural Based Services will focus on the use of satellite imagery and in-situ sensors for the purpose of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.
Michael is the General Director of Inter-Institutional projects at CONABIO in Mexico and has a master's degree in Geo-ecology and Geo-botany and a PhD in Remote Sensing. In 1995 Michael started his PhD research in a partnership project between the German (DLR) and Brazilian space agency (INPE) on SAR based analysis in the Amazon. In 1998, Michael joined Conabio to build up a new remote sensing department and subsequently develop two operational monitoring systems, one RS based on Land Cover and Land Cover change detection using Machine Learning tools and one based on in situ data in 400 managed sites using audio and photo data on fauna.
Cian Gallagher, Director, Applied Aerial Technology, presentation on Remote Sensing for Forest Management will focus of the practical use of imagery from satellite and drone sensors for everyday forest management. The presentation will demonstrate how to access and use satellite imagery along with some simple ways to use drones for forest inspection and inventory.
Cian Gallagher is Managing Director of Applied Aerial Technology. He has extensive experience with the use of EO data for natural resource management both in Ireland and abroad. With a M.Agr.Sc and B.Agr.Sc in forestry from University College Dublin he has an understanding of the natural environment from a commercial and scientific perspective. Cian also has a MSc in Remote Sensing and GIS from University College Cork. The combined knowledge of these technologies allows Cian to gather extensive information providing a unique insight into the forest environment. Cian has worked closely with rural communities to demonstrate and facilitate the EO data for enhanced decision support on projects focussed on biodiversity protection and management of invasive species, flood mitigation planning and augmented forest management.
